Is Your Cat Stressed?

Cats have a reputation for being aloof, but in actuality, they are very emotional, and are susceptible to stress and anxiety, just like people. Major changes, illnesses, friction with other pets, loneliness, and boredom are a few of the things that can cause anxiety in cats. Of course, our feline pals can’t express themselves directly. Behavioral clues are usually the main indication of kitty stress. A London, ON vet lists some common ones below.

Litterbox Issues

Normally, cats are very good about using litterboxes to do their business. If Fluffy is feeling anxious, however, she may start soiling outside of her bathroom. (Note: never punish your feline buddy for this. That will only increase her anxiety, and make matters worse.) Constipation and diarrhea can also indicate that your kitty is stressed.

Excessive Grooming

Fluffy takes her beauty regimen very seriously. Your furry friend will take time to clean herself daily, and keep that pretty coat looking—and feeling—soft and clean. However, if your kitty is feeling anxious, she may overly groom herself. This is kind of a nervous tic in cats: think of it as the feline version of chewing fingernails.

Uncharacteristic Vocalizations

We know, some kitties are just furry little chatterboxes that always have something to say. However, changes in the amount or sound of your pet’s meows can be a sign of stress. For example, Fluffy may vocalize in chirps and squeaks when she’s content, or just wants to tell you that her bowl is empty or there’s a moth in the kitchen. Your kitty may cry or yowl if she’s unhappy, though.

Lack of Appetite

Cats are known for being finicky. However, even the pickiest furball should show some interest in food, even if it’s just to complain about it and ask for something different. If Fluffy is ignoring her dinner completely, something may be going on with her.

Withdrawal

Just like people, kitties all have their own purrsonalities. Some are friendly and outgoing, while others are quite timid and shy. If your feline buddy is usually sociable, but suddenly seems withdrawn, she may be stressed.

Tips

The signs listed above can also be indicative of illness. If you your pet displays any of these behaviors, have your vet examine her, to rule out potential health issues.
