Caring for Cats in Apartments

One great thing about kitties is the fact that they are such easy keepers. Fluffy doesn’t need much space, and you don’t need to walk her. Also, while cats aren’t exactly quiet, most of them aren’t loud enough to bother your neighbors. These things make our feline pals a great fit for people in apartments! A London, ON vet offers some care tips for apartment-dwelling furballs below.

Toys

Fluffy may spend a ridiculous amount of time snoozing, but she can’t sleep all the time. Offer your kitty lots of toys to push under the couch, and take a few minutes a day to play with her.

Kitty Comforts

Make sure that your home is comfy and safe for Fluffy. When you leave your furball home alone, turn a light on if you will be out after dark. Your kitty may also appreciate having a radio or TV playing. The background noise will soothe her and keep her entertained.

Napping Spots

Small touches will help keep your furry friend content and purring. Beds, of course, are an absolute must. Get Fluffy a few store-bought beds, and then supplement these by putting folded throw blankets on chairs, sofas, or ottomans. A good scratching post or cat tower is also a must. If you don’t have a lot of room, offer your feline buddy some vertical space, such as kitty shelves.

View

Cats love to look out windows and see what’s going on outside. Offer your furball a comfy seat with a good view. Just make sure that your screens and windows close securely. If you open the window on a nice day, Fluffy may want to nap or hang out on your windowsill. You definitely don’t want her taking off or falling out!

Veterinary Care

Although indoor cats are usually healthier than those that go outside, that doesn’t mean they are invincible. Fluffy will still need regular exams, and should be kept current on her vaccinations and parasite control.

Litterbox

Your kitty’s powder room isn’t exactly an attractive centerpiece. Consider getting a piece to cover it. You can order custom furniture. Or, you can upcycle an end table, buffet, chest, or storage tote, and turn it into a litterbox holder. Just cut a door in one side for Fluffy. Voila!
