Cat Care Hacks

Do you have a kitty? If so, you’ve picked an adorable pet. While cats are fairly easy keepers, they do have their own specific needs . . . and a few bad habits. We’re here to help! A London, ON vet lists some cat care hacks below.

Kitty Mat

Upcycle an old litterbox into a kitty grass mat by planting wheat grass seeds. This will give your pet a bed of fresh grass to nap on. (You get extra purrs for positioning it in a sunbeam.)

Box Castle

Use simple cardboard boxes to make a castle for your furry little diva. You can keep it simple, and just attach a few boxes together, or go all out, and make a kitty palace, complete with different levels, balconies, and windows.

Hammock

We all know how much kitties love to lounge around. To make a hammock for your furball, just attach a piece of fabric to the legs of a table with four legs. This is a great way to keep Fluffy cool in summer.

Puzzle Toy

Cut a few holes in a Tupperware container, and then put a few cat toys into it. Your feline friend may have a blast trying to get her ‘treasures.’

Window Seat

Kitties love birdwatching! To make Fluffy a window seat, just add a smooth plank or board to the sill and widen it out. Or, use rope to secure a wide, rectangular wicker basket to the window by attaching it to the sill and to the ceiling.

Scratching Post

For a simple scratching post, glue carpet scraps to a smooth piece of wood. Hang it just above kitty height. Voila!

Nail Care Buster

Is your furball scratching the corner of your sofa or loveseat? Use clear, two-sided tape down where she is scratching. It won’t show, but your cat will hate the sticky feeling, and look for another nail-care station.

Kitty Distraction

Does your cat like to hang out on your desk? Get a shallow box—like the cover of a board game—and put that on your desk. Odds are, Fluffy will immediately curl up in it.

Furr Buster

Use a rubber dish glove to get Fluffy’s fur off your furniture. You can also use a damp sponge, or a squeegee.
